Artist's Comments

Recently, the 2010 Olympic Mascots were revealed.
For those who didn’t know- it shook up some people here in Canada.

Problem number 1:
The 3 “animals” selected were 3 Native Mythological Beasts.
Right off the bat, there were many people who disliked the idea of selecting these animals. Why? Because- as one reader of the Vancouver Sun noted, as well as many of my friends [Native and non]- it’s bad enough how the colonists took their land, nearly destroyed their cultures and continuously marginalize them, we have to continue to use their culture as a prospect cash-cow. As for the people themselves? The Canadian Government could care less- but hell if their art and their totem poles don’t’ bring enough tourisim to spill money into the local community!

Problem number 2:
After these three beasts were selected- The Thunderbird, The Sasquatch, and the Seabear- they contacted a Design studio in Vancouver to Design the characters. Low an behold, they hired someone with NO knowledge of the Native culture or mythology. The result:
Three animals were designed that bear NO likeness to the mythological creatures. Seabear looks like a small black cat, Thunderbird is a brown bear sporting a shirt with feathers, and the Sasquatch resembles an ewok/wookie.

I was fuming over this when I saw it- because once again, the concept of changing, misusing and destroying symbolisms and culture of the Natives into main stream culture left me cursing way into the night.
This ENTIRE situation left me fuming. The LEAST that could have been done in this situation was to hire a local NATIVE artists, and let them design the 3 mascots/logo for the new Olympic game. The revenues made of the design would be welcome within the Native community- after all, it is THEIR cultural symbols being used.
But low and behold not. We hire someone who has NO connection to the culture WHAT-so-ever to design 3 characters they have never even HEARD of before hand, and the result- 3 characters resembling pokemon. A bloody Abomination.
Furthermore, they decided to give the 3 abominations “;personalities” that included “Thunderbird enjoying skiing in Whistler and extreme boarding, Seabear love to Surf the waves and extreme ” etc. EXCUSE ME?? WTF?
How DARE you degrade someone else’s symbols into shitty pop culture?! How DARE ANYONE take it upon themselves to warp beyond recognitions the prideful elements of someone else’s heritage?
Thunderbird isn’t a f-ing shitty faced little bear- He’s a Majestic Magical Titan that blessed us with the rains, the thunder and lighting, saving the locals form the jaws of titan whales and more. He doesn’t F-ing go “skiing in Whilster”.
Seaber was a beast of kind and caring love. One of the most romantic and powerful stories in the culture- he isn’t a goddamn “Hello Kitty” wannabe.
The Sasquatch is the “Wild Man of the Woods”. Prominent in a Mouse Woman stories, this isn’t the “cuddley big foot” character depicted by modern day pop culture. He was married to the Wild Woman, and they would dine on children they abducted.

I wonder, if the situation was that the games were in Rome, would the three mascots be the Archbishop, Pope, and Jesus?
Oh, and then, would they hire a different culture to design the images? And further, accept that Jesus would be a punk rocker, the Pope a Goth, and the Archbishop a pierced Tattoo artist?
Oh I’m sorry, did I just offend anyone by saying that?

Funny how when it’s about a minority, almost anything is permissible, but the same to the “ruling” culture is out of the question.

The other day I went down to the Native Community Center here in Vancouver. I was casually talking to anyone and everyone when I brought up this subject. Some didn’t want to touch it with a 20 yard pole, saying that “they were used to it”, others were outraged, and others thought it was disgraceful. I brought up the idea of doing something against it- making some sort of campaign to raise awareness about this outrage and have something done about it. Again, the answers were divided- some said yes, others said no, others said “why bother”?
Realistically, I realize nothing will be done. It’s another situation of corporate bullshit vs. the marginalized minority. While my passions of fury are burning, others have bigger fish to fry than stupid mascots- but I guess I’m just OCD that way. I can’t let it go. It’s a shameful situation, and those pulling the strings are the ones that should be paying.
But I guarantee you they will. Because if there is ONE thing I have learned- is that in THIS culture, one does NOT take what does NOT belong to them. Weird, worrisome, and tragic things happen when they do. I’ve seen it with my own eyes, and heard it with my own ears. Those who thought to make a profit off the Supernatural went up against beasts FAR more powerful than Western World Corporate Giants. They will be punished, and not by our hands.

Seen here, the "Adult Verison" of the Mascots Designs.
(Another complaint was that the mascots were more marketed to kids not adults, for obvious reasons. I don't' think I'll be seeing ANY adult buying any clothing of souvenirs with the 3 mascots THEY designed).

I'm at the complete opposite end of Canada, so there's not any controversy here about the religious aspect of the mascots for the native and inuit people (there just isn't any kind of culture here for that...) but man, have I been hearing about the mascots from a design point of view.

I mean, COME ON. They're hideous. They look like something I expect to see at Disney Land or an amusement park. Not the Olympic Games! D:

I thought they'd pick a beaver or a polar bear or something. A moose. There are so many other non-offensive animals to pick from! They could have done all three! Moose, Bear, and Beaver. The stupid polar bear could have surfed, and moose could ski and the beaver could play hockey. There you go. Stereotypical Canadian fun that's not going to offend anyone by stealing what's sacred to them. And they could have been cutesy for the kiddies. XP

I'm totally embarassed for my country. I'm Mik'maq, so while it's not MY native culture they're raping, I can still sympathize. I adore Inuit designs and images and it'd be way nicer to see them respected than used and abused.

Regardless, I love the image! <3 You did such a wonderful job with the designs! It's too bad they didn't do adult designs...at least it would be the lesser of two evils.

I really appreciate that sentiment!
And STILL, I would have preferred to see it designed by someone in the culture. Becuase THAT is where it belongs. And so does all the money being made OFF it.

I agree with what you said- in all respects. Even being an artist myself, I thought the designs of whatever-the-hell-they-were were hideous. Just pure crap.

As fr the animals- the problem is that they cannot recycle old mascots or use animals that have been chosen before. Since the Bear was alreayd taken, Bell Canada capitalized on the Beavers, there wasn't much "left" for them to go on (becuase you know, Canada only really has 3 animals, th beaver, moose, and bear. *facepalm*)

Mind you, I'm originally form out East. And I myself am Jewish- but I like you I sympathize becuase I am HUMAN. I have a pair of eyes and a brain to see and figure out what is being done. It's a hideous vomitous mass. I actually can say that THIS time- I'm EMBARRASSED to be Canadian.

"they will be punished, but not by our hands" I have to say that all of the above I agree with except that line. If a man murders another man, should we not punish him? Or shall we let him walk free, and ignore the fact that he will do it again? Judgment by god or whoever (I'm sorry, I know very little about Native Americans and their god(s) so if offend you I apologize) should remain only by spiritual offenses. A symbol means nothing. What it actually represents means everything. The cross is a christian symbol to represent what we cannot see. We are a very visual race, if we were not, none of this would ever be a problem.

In reality- nothing will be done. In reality, no one will change it. In reality, minorities will still be marginalized. What we do have left, is the knowledge that there are Supernatural beings that are going to do something about it. Fact is, this is small potatoes to the even GREATER issues that have to be dealt with. But once again, it isn't going to be the big dogs doing something about it. And there are many of a variety of poeple trying to do somehting to change the world- but there is also the spiritual ones backing us up.

Assuming there are spiritual ones...I may be a follower of Christ, but I still have my doubts. That's why changing things the way they should be, should be more of a priority down here, and not just waiting to see what kind of back up we get from above.

Better Days

I haven't seen the mascots you've described and I can say now that I don't want to. That just breaks my heart. That's as bad as stuff like the Red Sox baseball team and their cartoonish "red skin" mascot that completely degrades the native peoples and turns them into a joke. I completely facefault when I'm driving through say Arizona and there's a gigantic teepee in the middle of the desert to attract naive tourists to buy cheap souvenirs. I mean come on... It goes to show how little people know about the myriad of separate cultures that everyone lumps into the term "Native Americans." I don't claim to be an expert, either, but it just makes me so angry. And then some aspect of a culture becomes "fashionable" and all of a sudden, every major company is producing cheap imitations. Like turquoise jewelry, which is one of my favorite things ever. But I wouldn't be caught dead buying it in a department store or any other retail store full of cheap imitations. I love buying it directly from the native ARTIST who created it, complete with their signature carved into the back. I love how each piece is unique and I value them over all my other jewelry. Native art is something that cannot be imitated and it's really abominable that some corporation would hire someone who completely lacks knowledge of the subjects they're supposed to draw. And I must say it was also very unprofessional of the artist themselves for not doing the proper research and at least TRYING to do it justice. Seeing as the native culture is being represented, they should definitely have asked native artists to do the design, as you said, since it is their culture being represented (and now misconstrued). By choosing those mascots, it could have been a great opportunity to educate the entire world and make them aware of the unique beauty of your culture and the stories behind the three mythological beasts, but they botched it by making it synonymous with "pop" culture. Personally, by your description of each one as they should be, I am inspired to do a little research and find out the stories behind them. (Which I will indeed do!) And wow, I just ranted a whole lot!! Anyway, I really think you should raise hell -- including writing an angry letter to whoever is responsible for those mascots. Show them what they should like. Geez...it's shit like this that can sometimes make a person feel ashamed to be white... Anyway, best wishes.
:icontarkheki:
Your sentiments about the multitude of Mascots using cultures as a background is spot on to mine. I don't understand it, I don't' understand why it hasn't been rectified, and I don't understand how people can get away with it.
I am also aghast at what you pointed out- the lack of research. I can only hope that it was lack of research, and not an even worse scenario of research, disagreeing about what the character symbolized, and changing it to fit "their need". In which that case, I will probably blow another few bloodvesles in my head.

One small correction though- it isn't my culture. As honored as I am to study under peoples of the culture, I wouldn't not like to claim that I am one of them without the proper courses of action. For now, I'm just an advocate for cultural rights- everyones and anyones. :)
