This is my submission for twilight-stray’s tattoo contest! She wanted a native designed tattoo, invited me to try it and I figured why not? I like doin’ this stuff, and I was in need of some good art preoccupation!
To explain: Wolf and Unicorn dance as friends under the Moon while Raven’s spirit takes flight in the heavens to rejoice.
The only part of this image that was changed form the original description was the Moon instead of the Sun. It just seemed wired to me that there would be a sun in the midst of these three animals when it’s clearly defined by native mythology that Raven and Wolf were Lunar animals and the Unicorn is a Lunar animal by the legendary concept as well- “Lunar” in the sense of female symbols and magic. (The Moon is the ancient symbol for the Female. Every cultural system that works on a Lunar calendar was Matrilineal to begin with or had more sense of equality between men and women, while all the Patriarch societies defined themselves by a solar calendar. Even by many cultural legends as well as some Pagan beliefs, the Sun is male, the Moon female.)
Anyhow, I hope you like it, and if you want the Moon with the 12 stars removed and a Sun in it’s place you tell me and I’ll do it! I also have the plane white version if you need for your tattoo (if I win this little competition).
Yes, believe it or not, I have to simplify the design a bit. I know there are you guys out there thinking “THAT’S simplified?!?” but yes it is.
Oh, and anyone can spot the 4rth animal in the picture? If so, tell me what it is and why you think it’s there.
There is an eagle in the unicorn. Two things, either the spirit of the eagle is present in the unicorn, or the unicorn is carrying an eagle of which will be birthed.
this is beyond stunning! i adore the poses and use of colour, which really makes it seem like the actual native american art! if i didn't dislike twighlight as much as i do, i'd probably get this inked. this type of art instantly makes the fangirl think your a twighlight fan when this art has been around for so much more time ^w^ but seriously, you should do more of this stuff! i'm trying to find a good serpent one for my hip but can't seem to. maybe i could commision you?
P.s. did you submit these to a tattoo company?as i visited a shop a few days back and saw one pretty much the same ^^
No I haven't actually.. I never allow ANY of my work to be used in Tattoo parlors, as it infringes upon the culture and it's cultural rules. If you know which parlor has done this, please forward me their information, as I have to take some action against them- they are stealing my work that I have no sold to them. Thank you for informing me of this!
no problem ^w^ the parlor is one in Britain and the name of the store is Hype Studios. the artwork was on one of their larger flash sheets. i'll go check up their info and send it to you as soon as i can
It's wonderful. I find the inclusion of the unicorn fascinating. At first blush it doesn't go narratively, but I like you explanation, and the lunar connection. It does seem amazing that this is a simplified version, it seems like an inkblot test to me, so many sort of faces, like I keep seeing a bird's head in the unicorn's rump and a face in the raven's wings. And no, I haven't been drinking
I'm always trying to fit apples with oranges... and trying to make it work contextually. Would just get bored doing the same old thing over and over. XD
maybe i could commision you?
